Is your jewelry starting to look cloudy or dirty? Lotions, perfumes, air pollution, and dirt can be some of the reasons why your favorite pieces are losing their shine. Luckily for you, we have some great tips on how to keep your everyday jewelry and unique gemstones clean and sparkly. Here are some inexpensive home remedies that will bring your jewelry back to life.

One of the most effective ways to clean gold is with warm water and mild dish soap. Dip gold into this mixture and let it soak for about 20 minutes. After soaking, use a soft brush to scrub away dirt and build up, then dry with a soft cloth. Storing your favorite gold pieces in a jewelry box with a strong exterior, will provide protection against external pressures and elements.

Take a small amount of non-gel non-whitening toothpaste and rub into silver using a gentle toothbrush to reach all its intricate spaces. Rinse with warm water and dry with a nonabrasive cloth. You can also use a specially formulated silver jewelry polish if you have a piece that is more difficult to clean. The most important consideration when trying to prevent silver jewelry from tarnishing is keeping the jewelry dry and away from other tarnishing pieces. Simply store in a soft cotton or velvet pouch.

A simple way to keep your diamond jewelry looking clean, is to soak it in a gentle degreasing solution, such as water with a few drops of mild dish soap. After you remove the diamond from the cleaning solution, use a soft toothbrush to remove any remaining dirt and then blot with a lint free cloth. Diamonds can get scratched in a jewelry box, as well as by other diamonds. Keep each piece separated in its own padded box to help protect them over time.

Gemstones require different cleaning methods based on their hardness and can be easily destroyed with typical cleaning methods. We recommend following the gemstone care guide to learn more about how specific gemstones should be cared for. Keep stones stored in a velvet pouch or gemstone storage case to avoid damage.

Gently apply a natural baby shampoo or mild soap to pearls using a very soft cotton cloth. Never clean pearls with a steam or ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. Both methods are likely to damage the outer layer of the pearl. They are prone to scratches and should be stored in a moist environment to keep them from drying out. We recommend laying them flat in a jewelry box with compartments.
